The New York Giants are on the verge of reaching the playoffs for the first time in five years, and they could clinch a postseason berth before most of the Week 16 games get underway. New York visits the Philadelphia Eagles on “Thursday Night Football,” facing a team that has virtually nothing to play for.
Philadelphia is out of playoff contention, having lost seven of their last eight games. New York has won eight of their last nine contests, and they might be the biggest threats to the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC. With arguably the NFL’s best defense, the Giants are legitimate Super Bowl contenders, and they are 2.5-point road favorites in Week 16.
Overall, the Giants don’t rank very high in terms of total defense. Fourteen teams have allowed fewer yards than New York, and they aren’t in the top five against either the run or the pass. But the unit seemingly gets better every week, and it should have another big game against a struggling Eagles offense.
Since Week 7, the Giants have allowed fewer points per game (14.9) than any other team. New York is third overall in rushing yards allowed per attempt (3.6), but it’s the passing defense that has become the team’s strength. Since Week 5, New York’s opponents’ passer rating of 70.0 is tops in the league.
That’s certainly not good news for Carson Wentz, who hasn’t played like a competent starting quarterback in the second half of the season. Wentz has the NFL’s second-worst passer rating (70.2) since Week 6, trailing only rookie Jared Goff. Wentz was terrific during Philadelphia’s three-game winning streak to start the year, but he’s since come back down to earth, looking very much like the rookie that he is.
The Giants could be without arguably their two best defenders Thursday. Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has missed the last two games after groin surgery, and cornerback Janoris Jenkins might be out with a back injury. But in spite of the recent injuries, the Giants have put together their best defensive stretch of the season.
Allowing just 13 total points in wins against the Cowboys and Detroit Lions, New York hasn’t surrendered a touchdown in the last seven quarters. The defense might not have much trouble stopping a struggling rookie quarterback and one of the worst receiving corps in the league.
The Eagles scored 26 points against Baltimore’s No.4 ranked defense in Week 15, reaching their highest point total since Week 3. Wentz threw for just 170 yards and no scores, but Philadelphia took advantage of two Baltimore turnovers and 128 rushing yards by Ryan Matthews.
New York’s offense hasn’t been any better than Philadelphia's. The Giants haven’t scored more than 17 points in their last three games, and they rank 27th in total offense. The game’s over/under of 41.5 is one of the lowest in Week 16.
Led by Odell Beckham Jr., the Giants seem to always make just enough plays on offense to ride their defense to a victory. The wide receiver leads the NFL with 10 touchdowns since Week 5, including two scores in a 28-23 victory against the Eagles on Nov. 6.
Having to stop one of the league’s best playmakers while facing an elite defense might be too much for the Eagles to overcome, as the Giants continue their march towards a third Super Bowl in the last decade.
Prediction: New York over Philadelphia, 23-16
We are down to the final two weeks of the 2016 NFL regular season. Here’s a full schedule for Week 16 action and it’s a little out of the ordinary.
With Christmas Day falling on Sunday, the NFL has moved the majority of the games to Saturday. Only two games will be played on Christmas. The good news is both are great matchups. First we have 1st place in the NFC North on the line when the Steelers host the Ravens. That’s followed by a huge AFC West clash with the Chiefs hosting the Broncos.
Week 16 will get started with the final Thursday Night game of the year (all 32 teams play on Sunday in week 17). It’s a NFC East showdown that has the Eagles hosting the Giants.
Unfortunately Saturday’s card doesn’t feature a ton of great games. There’s only 3 games that feature games with two teams with legit playoff hopes . Those being the Dolphins at Bills, Vikings at Packers and Colts at Raiders.
On the bright side, we get NFL action on Christmas Eve, which is a big bonus. Typically the only football on the day before Christmas is the meaningless Hawaii Bowl.
The final game on the slate for Week 16 is the Cowboys hosting the Lions on Monday Night Football. Just how big a game this is, won’t be decided until Saturday. If the Eagles upset the Giants on Thursday, Dallas will have already locked up the No. 1 seed. Making this a meaningless came for the Cowboys. If the Packers lose to the Vikings, Detroit could secure the NFC North title with a win. If Green Bay wins, the Lions will need to beat the Packers at home in Week 17 to take the division title, regardless of the outcome here.

US Sportsbooks NFL Week 16 Conference Props Odds, The 12-team field for this season’s NFL playoffs is starting to take shape with half of the spots already claimed. A few more spots are likely to be filled after this week’s action given that there are just two games left for each team on the schedule.
FastWager has recently updated its team prop bet odds to win both the AFC and NFC title in the march to Super Bowl 50 in early February. Starting in the AFC, the defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots remain the top favorite to win another conference title at +100 betting odds. They are 12-2 heading into Sunday’s AFC East clash against the New York Jets and a victory as three-point road favorites would seal the top seed in the playoffs.
The second-favorite to win the AFC this season is the up and coming Pittsburgh Steelers at +400. This is a risky bet seeing that the 9-5 Steelers are still in a three-way battle with Kansas City and the Jets for the two conference wildcard spots. This Sunday they face Baltimore as 11.5-point road favorites and they close-out the regular season next Sunday on the road against 3-11 Cleveland so they should get in.
The 10-4 Denver Broncos are heading in the wrong direction with just three wins in their last seven games following a 7-0 start, but they are +595 third-favorites to turn things around and make a run to the AFC title. The biggest thing the Broncos do have going for them is defense that is ranked first in the NFL in both yards and points allowed.
The 14-0 Carolina Panthers are flirting with perfection as seven-point road favorites against Atlanta this week followed by a home game against 6-8 Tampa Bay in Week 17. They are also +170 favorites to keep things going all the way to the NFC title. Given what this team has been able to accomplish so far, it would be hard betting against Carolina getting it done.
One team that could derail the Panthers’ incredible run is the 12-2 Arizona Cardinals. They have the league’s second-highest scoring offense and their defense is ranked sixth in points allowed (19.2). FastWager has listed Arizona as a +273 second-favorite to win the NFC.
The defending conference champion Seattle Seahawks have fought back from a slow start to clinch a wildcard spot in the NFC at 9-5 on the strength of a five-game winning streak. Their betting odds to win their third-straight NFC title have been set at +335.
The 10-4 Green Bay Packers had their second lowest point total of the season in a 21-13 loss to Buffalo last weekend, the third game in their last four where the total finished UNDER. The Packers are 1-3 ATS in their last four and have failed to cover as double-digit favorites this season.
The 2-12 Buccaneers are 1-9 SU in their last 10 and are 0-6 SU at home this season. However, Tampa Bay is 4-3 ATS in their last seven and 3-1 ATS when pegged as underdogs of seven points or more. The Bucs have scored more than 17 points just twice in their last 10, with the UNDER going 7-1 in their last eight outings.Green Bay Packers vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers Opening Odds and Betting Line
