Coupe de la Ligue: Round of “32” Results

The not-in-Corsica-Corsican derby was won with a 7th minute strike from Bastia’s veteran Brazilian Araujo Ilan as things go from bad to worse for Fabrizio Ravanelli’s men. On the upside, nobody got sent off.

In what was described by our roving correspondent as “a bloody awful game”, Ligue 2’s Auxerre turned over LOSC with an extra-time goal from substitute Sebastien Haller, who is having a very good October. The 19-year-old has just been promoted to the French U20 team for their two friendlies against Denmark, which they won 3-2 and 2-1, Haller opening the scoring in the second match, and then scored his second league goal of the season against Creteil the following weekend.

Lille rested first-team regulars Franck Beria, Florent Balmont, Salomon Kalou and Nolan Roux, but in the end neither side looked like scoring. John Jairo Ruiz had a very good chance for the hosts in the second half, but he found the post instead of the empty net. Paul-Georges Ntep showed glimpses of why he is one of Ligue 2’s hottest properties, but he struggled at times against Pape Souare, with Rio Mavuba covering any mistakes.

Just as the 15,000 Lillois were getting ready for penalties, Axel Ngando took a speculative shot, the combination of Rozehnal and Sawadogo blocked the effort but only into Haller’s path. The youngster stayed calm and slotted the ball beyond Steeve Elana.

Toulouse did indeed suffer a slight case of the yips, going behind to a goal from Nicolas Belvito on 34 minutes, but they pulled themselves together in the second half with goals from Abel Aguilar, Oscar Trejo, and Wissam Ben Yedder. The team looked pretty ‘A’, but as predicted, Ali Ahamada was dropped for Olivier Blondel in goal.

Signally failing to pull themselves together, lanterne rouge Valenciennes were two goals down at half time (Yoann Court, Ghislain Gimbert) and while Mathieu Dossevi got one back just after the restart, Gimbert made it safe with his second of the night. He was only on the pitch that early because ESTAC’s wonderkid striker Corentin Jean limped off 12 minutes in. Highlights available here. The home crowd did not sound happy.

Rennes had to rely on goals from two of their young tyros, 19-year-olds Adrien Hunou (who featured at the U19 Euros this summer and has, like Haller, just been called up for the U20s) and Cedric Hountondji (who has just been called up for les Espoirs), while Nancy almost went one better with an injury-time equaliser from 18-year-old Remi Walter. SRFC saw out extra time the better, however, Hountondji getting the winner in the 102nd minute.

The last remaining National side is out of the competition, with the added indignity that their hitherto cup hero Jonathan Tehoue was sent off, and their consolation goal was an OG from Nicolas Seguin. Youssef Adnane, Bryan Bergougnoux and Xavier Chavalerin with the goals for Tours, who sit second in Ligue 2.

After a slightly clenched first half where Nantes made chances but couldn’t convert, and Lorient played on the counter but couldn’t make it into the area, the visitors looked to be having the best of it in the second but it was les Canaris who opened the scoring on 73 minutes. As predicted, Francisco Aristeguieta and Alejandro Bedoya started for Nantes, and it was the American who got on the scoresheet. Mickael der Zakarian then shuffled his pack, including introducing 18-year-old Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, who only turned pro in the summer, and had only 17 minutes of first team time to his name – he got the second, in the last minute. Both goals involved someone being left free and clear at the far post.

Maybe not an upset given the context (Guingamp’s need to focus on maintaining their league position, Evian’s cup run last season) but slightly surprising given how the teams started. The first half was all EAG, who looked lively and were mainly held off by a solid performance from Jesper Hansen in the Evian goal, young striker Rachid Alioui making the most of his first start of the season to cause all sorts of trouble, and captain Thibault Giresse also putting himself about. Mustapha Yatabare got the opening goal on 25 minutes, a cross from Alioui being volleyed / miskicked back in by Steven Langil, to be headed home.

Evian then clearly had one of those half-time team-talks, and a tactical switch to a 4-4-2, and rocked on from there. Within two minutes of having a goal disallowed for off-side, Modou Sougou scored, Cedric Cambon chipping over the defensive line, and the substitute striker chipping the keeper. Cambon then scored the winner, a scramble into the net after a Fabrice Ehret cross / shot was tipped onto the bar by Guy Ndy Assembe and fell to Sougou to put it back in the mixer. Yatabare thought he’d levelled it ten minutes from time, but the referee blew up for a foul on Hansen after Diallo caught him in the face as they leapt for the high ball. A frantic finish saw Guingamp hit the bar but Evian held on for the win, the half-time tactical change from Dupraz the difference.

Montpellier seem to be playing the version of Fantasy Football where you only ever have five defenders to choose from, so with Yassine Jebbour unavailable after the weekend’s customary red card, it was a relief to see Siaka Tiene back from injury. Not for long, however, as he limped off at the half-hour mark to be replaced by Teddy Mezague. Sochaux then scored the opener, through Sanjin Prcic, and went in to the break 1-0 up. Montpellier levelled it just after the restart with a penalty from Jonas Martin when Morgan Sanson was felled in the area, and as both sides pushed for the winner, both also made all their substitutions.

This turned out to be a problem for the visitors in extra time, as Sanson had to come off injured, leaving MHSC playing with ten men with twenty minutes to go – a situation that worsened shortly afterwards as goalscorer Martinn was sent off. Ironically still with four defenders on the pitch, Montpellier went for an innovative 4-3-1 formation, but couldn’t hold out. Sebastien Corchia put Sochaux ahead in the 115th minute, and while the visitors kept rumbling forward, they were put to the sword with a third from Roy Contout, at which point Montpellier only had eight men on the pitch, as Vitorino Hilton had also picked up a knock. Benjamin Stambouli made several chances late on, and got a last-minute consolation, but les Lionceaux progress. Montpellier now have a slightly worrying injury / disciplinary list to contemplate as they prepare to host Nantes on Sunday.

Monaco’s first loss of the season came from a first-half goal from Antoine Devaux as Reims went one better than the 1-1 draw in game 8. Ranieri rotated his squad, Jakob Poulsen, Sergio Romero and Nicolas Isimat-Mirin all getting starts, and with Falcao suspended, Emmanuel Riviere and Valere Germain paired upfront. You could tell. Reims play with no fear anyway, and Johnny Placide had a good game in goal (and was also saved by the woodwork late on), and even the introduction of James Rodriguez at the hour mark could not break them down. Monaco had a staffer sent off from the bench and it all got a bit scrappy at the end as Reims started to stagger, but held on. Ranieri said he was happy with his players and «ce n’est pas grave, la priorité c’est le championnat et se qualifier pour la Ligue des champions.» Sentiments that sound slightly familiar after losing to Reims…

Bastia, Auxerre (L2), Toulouse, Troyes (L2), Rennes, Tours (L2), Nantes, Evian, Sochaux and Reims will be joined by the ‘European teams’ PSG, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Nice and St Etienne, in the huitiemes to be played on 17 and 18 December. The draw will be held on 7 November.
